Searching for inspiration I remembered this book from my childhood. (It belonged to my father originally.)A Russian story about a little girl and a crocodile in her apartment... And really nice page layouts.

The illustrator is Felix Kassowitz. Here is a site with his drawings, among them a lovely series on occupations. And also a few caricatures on the deportation from 1944.

Stari Most bridge in its original state

A bridge that looked (almost) exactly like this was built in 1566 and crossed over the river Neretva in Bosnia and Herzegovina connecting the Bosnian Muslim and Croat sides of the city Mostar. It was destroyed in 1993 during the Bosniak - Croat phrase of the civil war. The new bridge is a stone by stone replacement of the old bridge, built in 1998 from Western fundings and recently listed as Unesco World Heritage. This elemental human story could not be better narrated than by the staggeringly strong and simple design of the bridge. Truly, truly timeless.

The F Word issue of Granta Magazine has been launched yesterday. I illustrated a page for Night Thoughts by Helen Simpson. It is a great piece of writing and I felt very honoured to contribute to it with my illustration. Michael Salu's clear and smooth art direction made this commission very very enjoyable! Here are some of my first roughs along with the final piece.
